Embarking on a journey from Heraklion to Elafonisi Beach via the Topolia Gorge offers a scenic and adventurous route through Crete’s rugged landscapes. A 1.5 km-long gorge with towering cliffs and lush vegetation, including plane trees and oleanders. The gorge is home to the Cave of Agia Sofia, featuring impressive stalactites and stalagmites. During summer months, local vendors often set up stalls along the road, offering fresh produce, honey, olive oil, and other local products.
The road through the gorge is narrow and winding, with some sections requiring single-lane passage. A 100-meter-long tunnel, constructed in 1920, is a notable feature of the route. It’s the only hand-dug tunnel in Crete and is controlled by traffic lights due to its narrow width.
Elafonisi appears in the first places with the best beaches of Crete. The pink sand from the thousands of broken shells and the turquoise water of the lagoon makes a paradise that everyone wants to see and photograph.
Majestic colors, pink sand and green-blue waters. Swim in the shallow waters and feel the relaxed atmosphere of the lagoon. The small island is a Natura 2000 protected area with rare bio-communities. Lilies and more than 100 plants thrive in the dunes. Please respect this unique area and don’t take sand or any plants.
The beach is accessible via a narrow causeway. There are facilities available, including sunbeds and umbrellas, and nearby tavernas offer local cuisine.

Early start to ensure ample time at the beach. Meet your professional guide and set off in a comfortable, air-conditioned van towards the western region of Chania. Enjoy views of the Cretan mountains and olive groves during the drive.

A winding but spectacular route through one of the most beautiful gorges in Crete. Optional stop at Agia Sofia Cave for photos or a short climb (time-permitting).
Spend approximately 4.5 hours enjoying one of the most exotic beaches in Europe. Walk across the shallow lagoon to the tiny islet of Elafonisi, where the sand glows pink due to crushed shells. Swim in crystal-clear waters, relax under the sun, or explore small sand dunes and cedar trees.
Relax on the return route as we head east through the island’s dramatic landscapes. Optional short photo stop overlooking Kissamos Bay or White Mountains (Lefka Ori).
