The Hippie Caves of Matala

Overview
Matala is the small fishing village that was discovered by the hippies in the 1960s and gained fame at the ends of the earth. The cool waters of Mesara bay are surrounded by white sandstone rocks and mysterious caves. Before visiting Matala, we will stop at the Odigitria monastery in the western end of the Asterousia Mountains. Peaceful spot with lovely views of the surrounding valley and mountains.

Swim in the deep blue waters and feel the relaxed atmosphere of the village. The beach is organized with umbrellas and sunbeds and waves a blue flag. The village is full of cafes and souvenir shops.
Itinerary
8:00
Το πρωί ξεκινάμε για το νότιο Ηράκλειο. Η διαδρομή μετά την πόλη του Ηρακλείου είναι μέσα από Αμπελώνες.
8.00-9.30 1η Στάση στη Μονή Οδηγητρίας
In the middle of a wild landscape, where the road really stops, we come across the Odigetria Monastery, one of the oldest in Crete. The Monastery is surrounded by a high enclosure, with a fortified tower – known as Xopatera’s Tower. We stay to admire the monastery and the museum with the objects of another era.
10.30-13.30 2η Στάση Μάταλα
We arrive in the village early in the morning to swim in the clear blue waters when it’s not so croweded. We stay for 3 hours, enough for sightseeing, coffee and shopping in the numerous shops.
14.00-15.30 Στάση για φαγητό
In the traditional village of Sivas we will enjoy a meal with wine, water and seasonal fruits

Amazing Tour! Great food, sights and awesome guides. We had an awesome time. We were a large group, but easily accommodated by Crete With Us. The atmosphere was amazing, the weather was perfect, and the sights were beautiful.
